Agreed. There are some jokes in those seasons I've seen literally 100 times and still laugh. Back when Peter had more of an identity and didn't just play whatever role was needed atm. I think the fact they made the characters so interchangable later on is what makes it harder to connect. They are all walking contradictions and it cheapens all the jokes. Southpark is kind of getting that way too now sadly. Nowhere near the extent tho.

The first few seasons had a bit more charm. Peter was an airhead, but wasn't fully blown mentally disabled and a horrible person (they all are really). It's other things I miss too like Tom and Diane together and Cleveland's character.

Not all of the humor in the first few seasons came from the cutaways either. In later seasons, the best episodes are the ones that take a break from cutaways. Where they leave room for more organic funny parts. Also a lot of the more funny parts are the meta jokes.
