These are all the matches that have earned a Minus Five Star Rating (1-5) or a Minus Four Star rating (6-11) from wrestling critic Dave Meltzer.

How many of them have you seen and what are your opinions on them? Do you agree with Big Money Meltz?

1. Hollywood Hogan vs. The Warrior Halloween Havoc 1998
2. Los Villanos vs. Los Psycho Circus Triplemania XXIII
3. Mr. T vs. Roddy Piper Wrestlemania 2
4. The Bushwhackers vs. Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik Heroes of Wrestling 1999
5. Junkyard Dog vs. Moondog Spot WWF The Wrestling Classic 1985
6. Jenna Morascav.s Sharmell - Victory Road '09
7. The Warrior, Roddy Piper, Diamond Dallas Page vs Lex Luger, Sting, Kevin Nash, Stevie Ray, Bret Hart, Hulk Hogan - Fall Brawl '98
8. Sting vs Tony Palmore - Battle 7 1995
9. Sid Vicious vs The Nightstalker -Clash of the Champions XIII: Thanksgiving Thunder
10. The Bushwackers vs The Rougeaus - WrestleMania V
11. Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant - Wrestlemania III

Interesting to note: Hogan is on there 3 times.
Piper, The Ultimate Warrior, Sting and The Bushwackers are on it twice.

Who would have thought Sting and Bret Hart would end up on worst matches of all time lists?

I gotta say WTF at Wrestlemania III? Even if you don't like it because it was spectacle not skill... Minus 4 stars? One of the worst matches of all time? I mean like half the American roster was inspired by that match, the crowd went wild and it did great businsess. Hell Hercules vs Billy Jack was on the same show and he gave it 2.75 Stars, above average.

How you can say Hercules vs Billy Jack was not only better than Hogan/Andre but more than 3 times better is beyond me.

Hogan/Andre is on there? Lol. The match told a good story, and Andre was damn near immobile with back pain. The fact that he could work at all was amazing.

I get that it wasn't technically that great. But it's far from "worst match of all time" status. It's about a billion times better than Hogan/Warrior at Havoc, which was a botched abortion with dumb spots like Warrior log rolling around on the floor.

How is one of the participants being in non kayfabe chronic pain that nobody in the feud ever acknowledged existed a good story? dave acknowledges it was the right thing to do at the time but it was still a terribly wrestled match between two poor workers.

also keep in mind a lot of those scores were weighted on the quality of wrestling that existed at the time. A minus five star match in the context of say, modern WWE might look better now than it did then

anyway ot of those i've seen...

hogan/warrior at Havoc. It's hilariously bad and worth watching for that sole merit.

Los Villanos vs Psycho Circus. Unwatchable

Mr. T vs Roddy Piper. Holy shit what a boring match and it just ends in Piper DQ nonsense.

Survivor Jenna vs Sharmell. This is honestly the worst wrestling match I've ever seen but like Hogan and Warrior it's super funny and worth going out of your way to watch

The Bushwackers vs The Rogeaus. Soul drainingly boring

Hogan vs Andre. It's a three minute squash match between a bad wrestler and a bad wrestler who gets gassed in ten seconds because he's about to fall apart and die.

This is Meltzer. He's an Omega and Japan fanboy. He doesn't dare criticize modern wrestling. He defends stupid shit like Joey Ryan's dick flip. I like listening to Dave when he's talking about old school wrestling cause he's knowledgeable, but his opinions are just out there.

His point is Meltzer has a history of tearing down WWE/F and WCW for having bad matches, stupid moments, dumb storylines etc. But then doesn't hold Japan or the Indies to the same standard.

Hogan/Andre gets -4 Stars because "Neither can wrestle, the crowd and story doesn't matter"

But then he'll defend Joey Ryan throwing people with his dick, invisable hand grenades and Kenny Omega fighting children as "It's a fake show! Look at the crowd! all 300 of them had smiles on their faces!"

It's not so much a defense of pro-wrestling as it is an attack on Meltzer for being a completely inconsistent hipster who's opinions and thoughts shit to whatever will get him the most subscribers and attention at that very moment.

If you were bored you could edit together a debate of Meltzer arguing with himself by just playing his contradictory thoughts/opinions back to back

And when they did happen, fans and Meltzer completely shit all over them.

Mae Young's hand birth, Hector Guerrero in a turkey suit hatching out of an egg, Katie Vic, etc. all trashed and considered some of the worst moments in wrestling history.

Now you have dick flips, invisible grenades, matches with invisible people or blow up dolls and the fanboys cream themselves because that's mostly all that's left, fanboys who mark out over any dumb thing. Omega could take a dump in the ring and the crowd of neckbeards would go wild and Meltzer would rate it four and a half stars. 5 if it's in the Tokyo Dome.

Maze_ posted...

Exactly. Meltzer used to shit on Memphis wrestling too. Now it could get bad at times because of Jerry Lawler's comic fandom, but overall it was good wrestling you could take seriously.

Now, Meltzer excuses the worst as long as the crowd liked it. Well, the crowd sure did seem to like it in Memphis and the crowd sure did like Andre vs Hogan.

Yeah it sure has changed. That's why there less people watching today than ever and all that's left are the fanboys. No it won't ever be the 80's or 90's level again, but it could be better.

And God forbid someone agree with Jim Cornette. Hell I was thinking the same stuff before he even had any of his podcasts. Believe it or not, but there are people who like their wrestling to be a little more serious like a scripted athletic contest involving over the top participants than some video game or anime or bad comedy show re-enactment.

Andre vs Hogan isn't a great match, but the story is what's important. Seeing Hogan bodyslam Andre to get the victory, watching Andre being taken away on the motorized ring cart, pointing at Hogan, and then Hogan poses in the ring for 5 minutes, (one of the few times where it doesn't get old), It's a great ending and a great visual, and that alone should keep it off this list. Guarantee he can find another match to replace it.

No-one is watching wrestling for "believable competition" anymore - times have changed and things like the UFC have replaced that for the majority of people wanting to be entertained by combat.

It needs to evolve to offer something different - if that's more correct orientated then so be it.

This is a bad point

"The business has changed" should reflect a reviewers personal opinions

And the same is still true today. He will still bash WWE for arson and does so daily while defending the Indys and Japan for murder.

Meltzer hasn't changed, he's been pretty consistent in his views. The view being tell the people giving me money what they want to hear.

If Kenny Omega and Joey Ryan and the Young Bucks were in the WWE doing the same shit, he would deride it.

If AEW of PWG or LU did the Mae Young hand thing or had Big Dick Johnson going out and making an ass out of himself they'd love it and hail it as great comedy wrestling. If the librarians were mid-90s WWF gimmicks they'd get trashed more than they already do, but a lot of fans give them a free pass because of the company they're in.
