I played through with all the characters and beat it with every character included with the base game, then stopped playing.

Never bought any DLC

For the board here, yeah. That's pretty much the cycle.

Personally I never cared about the DLC. I didn't even want to buy Banjo but did it anyways because I attend locals and can get part of the fee waved if I bring a set up. I only play 2 characters and have no interest in touching anyone else.

I used Mewtwo and Corrin a lot in Smash 4, and I use Banjo a lot in Ultimate. Besides those, all the other DLC drops go the way you said.
