At least he admits where it comes from. Idk if his apology is sincere but maybe now people will think twice before using the word.

This won't result in anyone thinking twice. The people who use it regularly will still use it, the people who don't use it will continue not using it.

I teach in a title 1 school, people would say it's in the "hood", and I can somewhat confirm this. I spend half my day telling kids to say dumb or stupid instead of the R-word. I actually had one kid who used the word A LOT and when I corrected him he says to me "I would never call someone who's got a disability R-word" and later that year he got in a fight with another kid who was actually bullying the lifeskills students.

With all that said, this is a grown man who put it in a written tweet and then hit share, so there's really no excuse.

I think it's more an age thing.

It wasn't always a bad word. I don't remember it being controversial when I was in elementary or middle school. That and gay were go-to insults. Nobody really meant anything by it other than something was dumb/lame/annoying.

I wouldn't do either these days, of course. But I guess some people just have some weird attachment to particular insults from 20 years ago and/or see it as a prime opportunity to stir up trouble.

I did let the R word slip back in 2013 because I worked with a guy who said it a lot and the elementary/middle school conditioning pulled it out of me, but even then I immediately got that "oh no" chill.

I understand that some people still use it colloquially, but it really is there to add insult to a disability and it shouldn't be used. My opinion is that this should be considered a first warning for everyone and the next person to use it should lose their damn career over it.

I'm not saying they had it worse than people in slavery, but their conditions weren't much better. It's also a term used specifically to demean someone for having a disability. If someone said "fuck the blind," we'd regard them as the lowest form of asshole. But you insult people with mental disabilities and you might even get a laugh depending on what company you keep. Their history has been one of degradation and cruelty. Even now, they're still subject to ridicule and denial of basic human respect as if what they lack were somehow their fault.

No, I'd say somebody who uses the r-word is just as bad as someone who uses a racial or anti-Semitic slur. The difference is that they might not have stopped and looked at what they're saying. Society reminds us to treat others with respect. It doesn't keep such a stern watch over being respectful of the rights of those with disabilities.

Im not saying that disabled people havent had it bad. But im just tired of people always trying to draw some sort of comparative abuse between every other group and black people. Why cant we just acknowledge that every group had had unique challenges( especially black people) and just let leave it be? Every other group does not have to be latched onto black people. Doing so not only dilutes our energy, but allows other groups to take progess and paybacks that should go to black people. It is also highly disrespectful.

Black people are tired of being fed the women, gays, mexicans, Irish, chinese, *insert group here* were treated as bad as you were. It's then usually followed up with "well why can you do better?" Or "well if we help everyone then black people will be helped too. We cant just help one group" ( while ignoring all the specific benefits most singular groups have gotten). It's the same when i hear"X word is as bad as calling someone the N word"!), Ignoring tha fact that the N word was specifically used to dehumanize a group of people based soley on skin color.

Most of the historic mistreatment of disable folks are from other countries anyway. Black people are hated all over the world and are still mistreated in most places where we are not the majority.

So thats why i said what I said. Every time i hear it i my eyes roll out of my head.

Because people think there's a hierarchy in which some prejudices are more acceptable than others.

The "who had it worst" game is a tricky one and not worth playing. But people who suffered should not have that treated lightly regardless of whose was worse. Genocide against Native Americans, genocide against Jews, slavery imposed on black people, confinement to abusive asylums... It doesn't matter who had it worst of all. They were all subject to things nobody should be subject too.

And whereas nobody would think of dropping the n-word or k-word without ramification, we still have sports teams named after a term coined from collecting Native American scalps (redskins) and a casual use of a term meant to degrade people with mental disabilities or draw an unflattering parallel between stupid decisions and cognitive disability.

That's the reason people draw a comparison to the use of that word. Because it's the one thing that's universally forbidden when there should be many things on that list of, "Don't say it unless you want to have your shit fucked up in the long run."

A very short 20 years ago the word was for the most part socially acceptable and even used by employers, teachers, and was heard on PG rated movies.

Fast forward to today....say the word and you're FIRED.

Honestly, the punishment causes more damage to society than saying the word. But hey that is where we are today in society. We will punish punish punish until there's nothing left. And then when we run out of things to punish we will look for more.

Damn, maybe thats why I use that word.
