Ive never been much of a comic reader, but I loved Preacher. Though that does go against your one volume limit.

same, but I only read the novelization.

Watchmen is also a classic, and is technically a part of DC.

you can also get Superman: American Alien.

it focuses on Clark's formative years before he's officially Superman, and it's really good, IMO.
