Well here's the logical way to think of this one.

Bret got told some bad info.

Vince willingly walked into the locker room and got clobbered

I would say Vince knew he was a dick and ate one for it.

ORRRR

The whole thing was a big scandal and all above happened but Bret and Vince shared a limo to the hotel where they had oral sex and watched Kindergarten Cop on PPV for 3.13$

I mean i feel like it was both. The sexual tension of the former caused the latter.

Except Bret had fulfilled his contract and actually didn't even have to show up for the match, not to mention that he had reasonable creative control in his contract.

He didn't want to drop it to Shawn and especially not in Montreal, but he would have been glad to forfeit it on Raw the next night or drop it at a house show.

Jim Cornette screwed Bret by reading a book about the early days of pro wrestling and its shadyness and gave Vince the idea of screwing him.

Nerdy-ness and a book screwed Bret.

And fuck Shawn Michaels. If he wasn't such a prima-donna and if Vince didn't have such of a man crush on him and let him get away with a ton of bullshit, maybe Bret would have been more willing to lose to him.

Bret said he'd drop the title in a New York event right after Survivor Series. I don't know why Vince got it in his head Bret was going to double-cross him and take the belt to WCW. It's not like Vince "had it coming" for a previous transgression or whatever.

It was pure paranoia.

I can see Vince's side too, he felt that all Bishoff had to do was announce on Nitro the next night that they signed the WWF champion and that would severely harm WWF.

Didn't Vince get burned just before that by the woman's champion who appeared at a WCW event with the WWF belt and threw it in the garbage live?

He did but I think that was because of his own arrogance. As I recall he wasn't being very cooperative during contract negotiations.

Bret had actually said to him that he'd do WWF right on the way out and he was already given Vince's blessing to reopen talks with WCW after Vince couldn't honor the big money deal he signed him to the previous year. At least to me it seemed like they were being honest with each other and not trying to dupe the other party so how things deteriorated after that is somewhat of a mystery to me.

I did hear something about Shawn giving Bret shit about how Bret agreed to drop the title (something like "Cool, but I would never do you the favor.") and Bret may have had it out for Shawn but I've only heard that once and I don't know what the original source was.

Bret was equally as difficult to work with as HBK.

Nash said he refused to do a spot in their cage match where he hit Bret with a jackknife at the end right before The Undertaker pulled him through the ring.

Nash was cool with losing but wanted to get heat for the Wrestlemania match between him and The Undertaker by making it look like Taker cost him the title. Bret thought it would make him look weak.

It technically started in the aftermath. The "Mr. McMahon" character was Vince steering into the bad publicity he got off the back of the Montreal Screwjob.

This nonsensical pretape that basically admits "I run everything around here and I can make the content more edgy and mature anytime I want becuase 'lol kayfabe iz ded'," is the formal start, by all accounts (referred to as the "Shades of Gray" speech).
