That sounds awful to me. I'm an introvert and a shut-in by nature, but I like modern technology.

it's something you have to experience to understand. Being part of nature makes you feel fulfilled. Modern life is very surface level

I think about this quite often. Im quite fine with the thought of no more electricity. I'm content resigning myself to books for the extent of entertainment. Maybe not permanently, but I think I can go a few years without electricity. I'll actually be going camping for a bit over a month so who knows, maybe that will change my attitude.

No it doesn't. Its relaxing for awhile if the view is nice, then I get bored.

Going for a hike is not being a part of nature

living off the land with no amenities makes you feel a part of it. The pace of life changes. You're able to predict the weather. You see how everything works together. You gotta be out there for weeks or months

It's got a culture of people who do that for a reason. It's got the frontier appeal.

Nope.

Plus, the government doesn't want people being too self-sufficient anyway. Today's farmers know that better than anybody.

Nope. The Army and all the stupid FTX I took part in killed any notion I previously held that roughing it in nature could be fun.

No, but sometimes I fantasize about just driving out west (I live on the east coast), and living a more nomadic style just working odd jobs in random places for food and shelter.

This does not sound even remotely appealing to me. Like at all. Its the no amenities part that I have a problem with. I already live life at a pace i'm comfortable with (okay, my job could move faster, but its paying the bills right now and i'm just there to save up and move next year.

You know what's appealing to me? The internet. The internet has a virtually infinite supply of information, entertainment, and social connection that keeps me content on most days, and incidentally google can show me the weather a week in advance.

it just seems a little backward to me

if I was gonna just disappear somewhere and live off the land I'd pick somewhere much closer to the equator

I've gone 2 years without a cell phone in modern times (~7 years ago), it was the most peaceful time of my life. I had an iPod touch that received texts but I had to connect to wifi to get it. So if I traveled anywhere, I was prepared in advance, like maps loaded in my iPod. And I was basically using my iPod as a camera. No one could bother me when I was out. It was so nice.

I do dream about it. I don't think I can go without a cellphone anymore for the rest of my life. But I can absolutely live without a TV. I'm a simple man. I would need some whiskey though. I'm perfectly happy sitting in my livingroom, sipping whiskey, and reading a book, or making a sketch, or whatever.

All of the most livable areas have been converted for use by civilization so anywhere thats still open to doing something like that would be a hard time (that is, theres a reason nobody is living there now)

Also people arent mean to live in isolation. I love being part of a family/community/tribe and contributing to those around me, and would lose a sense of purpose just living for myself

This. That would be an extremely boring existence to me. I'd like to more or less exit society, or at least the need to work for an employer, but not go off into the wilderness somewhere.

I fantasize being taken away from this planet by a friendly alien civilization and they treat me like a vip guest on their world.

Then I get to travel space with these guys and meet other races but never back with earth because we are actually the most dangerous species.

I usually fantasize about ditching everyone I know and going somewhere else where I'd probably never run into them, but not ditching the entire society lol

Essentially this. I have thought about living a more quiet life, but there are many modern amenities I wouldn't be comfortable giving up.

All of you claiming that you would love this would not be happy after a week or a month, and thats if you do not have anything go wrong like lack of certain food, drinkable water, and medical supplies.

This is not even taking into account when you get sick, if you get injured, or wind up having to deal with a predatory animal like a bear, wolf, snake, etc.

Instead of going to an extreme change your current life to be less stressful, disconnect your phone/tablet/ etc and relax.

Live off the land will lose its novelty and romantic look real fast if you actually experience that shit.
