The cameras will use artificial intelligence to review images and detect illegal use of cell phones, according to Transport for NSW.

Images identified as being likely to contain a driver illegally using a call phone will then be verified by authorized personnel, authorities said, noting that images captured by the system would be "securely stored and managed."

If this ever happens in North America, it'll set a record for traffic offenses that get fought in court.

Sounds like it'd go the way of speeding cameras.

After having so many near misses with people clearly distracted by phones, I'm actually a huge supporter of this. Not only will it help improve behaviour and reduce accidents, those who get caught help pay more tax to fund the roads/etc.

What about people who are "hands free" or just use their phone to listen to a podcast in the car having the phone on the seat or on a phone holder not in their hands.

That's legal/permitted here and I also use that.

The issue is those people who are texting/surfing Instagram/etc whilst driving and because they're doing a combination of touching/interacting and swiping and looking down, they are significantly distracted and not focused on the road... assuming they even have a hand on the wheel.

I'm no fan of big brother watching, but I hate oblivious drivers. Especially 18 wheelers that decide a headset is unnecessary, that's already illegal but I've seen a lot of them distracted by their phone

Public surveillance isn't the answer tho
