If not what's a good site you'd recommend (preferably free)?

I don't know, I guess the most common languages? Javascript? Python? When you're unsatisfied with your current job people always say "learn how to code" so that's what I'm thinking about doing.

Freecodecamp is better
Okay, thanks.

I'm debating between these four sites.

Codecademy
W3Schools
Udemy ($)
freeCodeCamp

Hmm, let me think...

If you're serious about learning then use them all. All the professional programmers I know are constantly using these sites for help anyway.

python might teach bad habits tbh. Maybe just learn your web dev shit. HTML, css and JavaScript. I tend to learn better from YouTube vids though.

once you are done with those move onto python/ Django or php.

Okay. So I'll start with those three. By the way, are you a programmer?

start with HTML and CSS use free code academy and a YouTube tutourials vid in conjunction and make some projects along with it. HTML isnt technically a programming language but that shit isnt important right now.

also yeah sort of. Im studying software engineering at uni and Im working on indie games/learning web dev at the same time.

Youll hear a lot of hate on it by asking online

But if your looking to learn, if else, for loops iterators, javascript functions, it will get you started

Not a lot of content on c# or python, sql tutorials are too anal on the syntax and only accept one answer

As someone who has little interest in front end coding I dont use it

Oh okay, seems like Javascript is one of the main things I should learn.

So I'm going to start with HTML and CSS, then Javascript. After that I'll assess where I am, I guess. It will probably be a year or so before I can say I have a decent grasp of those languages, since I'm an absolute beginner. Oh well, if I start now that's something.

Anyways, thanks for the help.

You can probably bang through the html and css intro courses today even if its your absolute first exposure

I like how they present their content, I really dislike learning from videos like pluralsight/udemy

I found that with Codeacademy I was never really taking anything in, I was just copying and pasting massive chunks of code. Obviously that's at least partly down to my own methods of teaching, but I never felt like the site did much to discourage that

Pluralsight has probably been my best source of development, it's very pricey though - I'm lucky enough to get a free subscription as part of my work

Get a book of your choice, like Big Java by Cay Horstmann. Learning something new over the internet isn't very productive. You'll learn snippets but they don't explain how to plan and assemble everything together.

The problem with these coding programs is that they don't teach the fundamentals. They give you like 4 quick basic tutorials and then from there they go 0-60 real quick. I think it's best if you take college courses.

When this happens you just gotta keep at it. Ask around, do other tuts of the same language etc. it'll eventually sync in. By far the hardest thing in programming is algorithms but you shouldn't worrty about data structures and algorithms in depth till you've atleast got an intermediate understanding of a programming language (html and css are technically not programming languges)
