If so, what do you think disqualifies them from being recognized as legendary games beyond your own taste?

Dark Sector. I was released in the shadow of Gears of War but I still think it's a more enjoyable game to play, despite it's flaws and lack of popularity.

California Speed (maybe "favorite" is a stretch...guilty pleasure). Gameplay and graphics are sub-par but it's got such exotic locations and so many unlockables.

Super Batter Up for the SNES
Probably like the 10th most popular baseball game on the SNES, but it's the one I had as a kid and I mastered that thing, played it regularly well into adulthood. Got a buddy of mine into it in high school as well, we eventually went so far as to poke around a rom with a hex editor and create our own lineups. Largely unknown and if you really lined them up it I'm sure it was objectively worse than some of its contemporaries, but for me it was iconic. Like, I wouldn't be surprised if my friend and I combined to put more hours into that game than the rest of the world combined. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
