There's a big difference between $40/hr with varying work hours and schedule and $40/hr with a fixed set of hours every week (guaranteed 40 hours regardless whether or not work is slow)

No, that's only 83k gross salary. For reference a few year's ago I was making 150 base salary in San Francisco and it felt like I was doing ok.

How many hours you working? If it's 20 hours, you'll make the same amount at half the rate for twice as long. The difference being how much more emotionally healthy you'll be for not working 40 hours.

Depends on your age, your commitments, and where you live, $40/hr might be sufficient but also depends how many hours.
