Romes187, hope you don't mind i'm going ahead and continuing your precedent. probably more people i'm forgetting, this was mostly from memory. what's up guys? what's on today's docket for what you're working on?

i'm still trying to look up good research about planetary mass redistribution for the plot point inspiration i had about my mana springs a few days ago.

and it's friday, so there is a new Fifty Word Fantasy prompt over on /r/fantasywriters, this time with the theme of "Epic". working on an entry but it came out to 63 words initially and I've only managed to pare it down to 51! aauuuugghhh! one last word that needs to be cut, and i can't think of any way to do it lol. i'm getting hungry right now. maybe i'll be able to think about it better after i eat my breakfast.

oh, great game. i played the unofficial fan translation a ton back in the day. always chose Mikhail because his army battle and ruling minigames were such a blast, even though i sucked terribly at the ruling one lol. who are you playing as? i have the remaster on my wishlist, wanna get it so bad, but only if i can find a good guide on the ruling minigame.

Decided to try an all dialogue one for the Epic themed 50 word thing

Your highness, you are a good man. You know what needs to be done. Please.
Flattery gets you nowhere.
But-
The Valdetian army is no concern of ours. Let the filthy Southmen bicker away.
What of the Valdean Queen? The execution is tomorrow. What of your daughter?
So be it.

nice! definitely seems pretty epic. and yeah, sometimes in these prompt there just isn't room for dialogue tags lol.

this is what i ended up submitting:

What is The Philosopher-Kings' Legacy, you ask? Some say an epic parable on how to rule. Some, a speculative vision of the ideal society, never intended to be actualized. Some, a tool for perpetuating societal control. The truth? It's what those in power make of it, nothing more, nothing less.

it's about the nature of my book-within-a-book which shares its name with the title of the book series. which i gather from a post on r/writers i made yesterday there is no official specific term for. maybe i oughta try tweeting Brandon Sanderson and ask what he thinks it should be termed lol. the best i can come up with from throwing together greek root words is "enbiblionym", which is "within book name". ???? lol i dunno.

thats a tough one...book within a book...will have to think on it

decided i wanted to add some detail to the small handheld explosives one of my guys uses to get them out of a bind (its known he's a demo expert)

but i realized googling "handheld explosives" doesn't look good...haha. Can't seem to find anything other than detection kits.

yeah, but specifically one that shares its title with the book and/or book series it's in. i know it's that way with The Way of Kings. i'm only partway through it right now myself, but from descriptions of and discussions about it i've read, i know that comes into play during the narrative. and i was just educated yesterday that that is in fact the case with all of the book titles in the Stormlight Archive series, which i was previously unaware of. but yeah, that's why i was saying i might oughta tweet him about it lol. the only difference is that with him it's his book titles, and with mine it's the series title.

hey, you gotta research what you gotta research. as long as you don't do anything actually shady with what you turn up, i don't think it will amount to any trouble for you lol.

Hoping to have an hour or so today to get through a chapter. Nearing the end.

what are your favorite words to ctrl f and cut?

seemed
realized
felt
adverbs of all sorts
was (this one really makes prose better if you can get the sentence down without it)
looked

and might look for active versus passive but Im pretty good at avoiding passive writing on my drafts.

i also have to do a dialogue voice check. Need to flavor some characters words to make the pop more. I can see a few sounding a lot alike

I mean all of my updates are basically just oh I hit 158k words, oh I hit 160k words, hur hur, etc.. I dont know how interesting that is.

I guess I could talk about tropes I'm using in my book. The main ones are villain redemption and rivals to lovers. Anyone a fan of those? What tropes are y'all using?

oh i love the villain redemption trope. lol actually there was just a thread on one of the writing subs i go to like last week or something asking the same question, and that's basically what i responded with. although in the way i'm using it, the secondary antagonist who goes through a redemption arc was actually mostly a patsy for the primary antagonist, though not entirely free of wrongdoing himself.

i guess i'm also using the "Viewers are Geniuses" trope lol, like i think i discussed before, since the tvtropes page on it fits my process basically to a T. i guess i have veered into that territory in trying to avoid the "Viewers are Morons" trope. but to be fair, the medium matters, and it's not as bad of a trope to have in written word as it is in television.

but anyway, yeah, not every post has to be about updates on what you're doing. this is a great discussion starter. i'm sure we can think of more.

Yeah villain redemption is my favorite too. I think Vegeta left an imprint on baby spanky or something.

I'm more worried about the rivals to lovers, because I think that often comes off as kinda cheap or fan fictiony. Like what if Harry Potter suddenly started making out with Draco Malfoy, lol.

yeah i dunno really how to handle the trope, so i don't really have anything meaningful to say about it lol, besides i guess good luck. i'm terrible with romantic subplots tbh so any and all that i do have are pretty underdeveloped and understated. i'm gonna have to work on that. the closest thing to rivals to lovers i have would be assassin and mark to lovers. dunno if that fits a particular trope or what the trope would be called.

whoa.... i was just watching a couple youtube videos about the Higgs boson and the Higgs field, and how the field is theorized to be what imparts or assigns mass to all matter in the universe. it got me thinking about a possible concept for space travel in a sci-fi setting that would involve creating an engine that could negate the effect of the Higgs field in a localized area, thereby rendering any matter within that area massless, and thus able to travel at the speed of light. could be a neat idea for sci-fi space travel, i think.

yeah, it is a bit like the titular "Mass Effect" from that game franchise, but i think it's different enough lol. although the problem would exist that on even a galactic scale (nevermind intergalactic), the speed of light isn't actually all that fast..... the Milky Way is 100,000 light years across. maybe it could affect a whole column of space like the mass relays do or something.

oh, i completely forgot today is friday, so there is a Fifty Word Fantasy prompt. this week the theme is "Adventure." gonna drum up an entry.

and i'm totally gonna get it together for the prompts on the sci-fi subreddit too. i have solidly established now that they are on mondays, not wednesdays or tuesdays like i thought before. so i'm give gonna get the next one a crack too. it'll at least be a way to help keep this thread going.

alright, here's my take on the prompt:

Cresting the jagged outcropping, the girls found their kite. It had become tangled in a tree that itself was tangled in a mana spring's gravitic distortions. At its raked angle, Minyrva knew she could climb it.

"Don't do it!" Deana knew the danger, and Minyrva's boldness.

Her words went unheeded.

whoa, so my entry for that prompt has to do with the "origin story" if you will of one of my six viewpoint protagonists, and just thinking about that bit of background for doing the entry has gotten my juices flowing and allowed me to fill in a few small but important gaps in her history and how it relates to the narrative. i have the meat of her eventual character arc completely pinned down now. it feels pretty great.

that's another reason i love these prompts, besides being a good exercise in brevity. they do something really get the creative juices flowing.

couldn't help but go sci-fantasy with it:

good entry, high tension. not very sci-fi though lol. but i often struggle with my fifty word fantasy prompts in getting the fantasy aspects to show through. mostly when i do a vignette or excerpt from my high fantasy/arcanepunk setting. it's like... i know that it's something from a fantasy setting, but then i get it all typed up and submitted and i realize, oh, it doesn't really seem much like fantasy without the context that only i know about it.
