This ain't worth more than $400 and after tax it comes out to like $470.

I built this system with the same specs (including an OS) for like $30 less and it is SHIT. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone in this configuration.

these are for enterprise customers. enterprise IT shit is always overpriced because companies are paying for it with their IT budgets, no surprise that you can get it cheaper on the consumer lvl if you build a PC yourself. these PCs are also designed to be more robust than your consumer one since they are made to be deployed over and over again

$23 Apevia PSU? Are you trying to kill yourself? Because that's what bargain bin PSUs do.

I built this one as a counterpoint as it IS a system I'd be okay with selling to someone (featuring 8GB of RAM for dual-channel support and an SSD of roughly the same size). Slightly more expensive but far more bang for the buck.

And they're calling that crap a "Black Friday deal".

You need to click on it. Originally I uploaded it with GameFAQs' inline image uploader but that shrunk it down and you couldn't read it at all. At least with Imgur you can go to the page itself and read it.

The Precision segment is meant to target workstation-level tasks but that is such a terrible system I wouldn't even give it to someone in accounting. They'd be up my ass all day about how unbearable it is to use.

But you'd be happy to give them a system that could literally go up in flames? The cheapest power supply I put into someone's computer was an Antec Earthwatts several years ago and it's still working. A bargain bin PSU brand like Apevia is likely to fail in a matter of months and take the whole system with it and probably start a few fires too.

Also, it's not for enterprise customers, I got that deal from the small business newsletter emailed to me.

Enterprise would probably be pricier still but I also assume they'd be getting better offers than shit like that because they have a rapport to maintain with Dell. I take "small business" to mean a shop with maybe no more than 10 people in it without any sort of dedicated IT procurement that might take the time to look at the details before slamming the buy button and then whinge about what an awful computer they got in the bargain.

I bought a couple of tablets from their small business segment awhile back because they weren't marketing them to the consumer sector for whatever reason.

$400 buys you a shit computer? Who would have thought.

Also realistically, 99% of people out there would spend the extra $30 to have someone else build their PC for them. That is almost zero markup.

companies don't want to deal with some IT manager that builds all their computers from scratch, they want something modular with replacement parts widely available and strong support from the manufacturer

it may be overpriced, but it's still better than building all your own workstations and warrantying them yourself

I'm saying I'm surprised a computer like that even exists in 2019. I figured even for around $500 you'd still be getting something decent, given that OEMs can get better pricing on components than consumers (so they can sell for less than one might do for building an identical system entirely off the shelf).

Business markup is a different issue but, at least in the past, I never felt like I was getting swindled by their small business segment compared to shopping in their consumer segment (in fact sometimes you could get a system that met your needs for less in the small business catalog).

This is from the same deal page and I think this is actually about right for what you're getting in this package: https://deals.dell.com/en-us/work/productdetail/3cv2

I'll see what I come out to trying to build something along these lines (making some assumptions and...not cheaping out on the PSU because apparently that's a huge hangup).

UPDATE: After tax this system is $1334. A system with the same setup built by hand (including an OS) with the cheapest parts I can find (that aren't trash, using a Corsair 550w PSU and a Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 NVMe drive) and skimping slightly on the wifi (it has a BT 4.0 module instead of a BT 4.2 module so I could get a $10 card) comes in at $1261. Once you're in this price point I think differences sub-$100 start mattering a little less so $1334 isn't a terrible price to pay (and I'm sure I could find $73 worth of parts if I really wanted to make them equal).

I think you're overestimating just what the average office employee does with their work computer. Not everyone is programming, doing 3D modeling, CAD work, data analysis or other stuff that requires horsepower. Your average person will be emailing, interacting with web apps through company intranet, Office, and maybe some proprietary programs depending on what they do.

If you're working with something like Excel on a regular basis having only 4GB and a platter drive will burn. Also web browsing is actually pretty taxing in this day and age. You can chew up 1GB of RAM just by browsing, depending on what browser you're using, and if you only have 4GB of RAM that'll get swallowed up fast.
