I just finished episode 40, where Frieza enters his final form.

In the original anime, was this a lot more drawn out? He makes three transformations in four episodes. It really seems like the middle transformations were unnecessary. Especially his third form, which he was in for all of 12 minutes.

Also did they just stop caring about Bulma? And will they ever care about Yamcha again?

oh yeah it was def more drawn out
bulma is no longer a main character from here out, but she is a decent side character
yamcha on the other hand......

The OG DB was more drawn out in general, but even then, his second and third forms didn't last that long.

It seems like they mostly existed to make Piccolo a badass and subsequently make Frieza a threat again immediately after.

The entire Namek saga was insanely drawn out. There were so many episodes that they basically turned it into two separate sagas ( The Namek / Ginyu saga - and the Frieza saga).

It felt like Frieza was hanging around for like 40+ episodes before he even did anything. And then it was like another 30-40 eps for his fight alone. I remember many episodes being used for each of his phases. He was basically just toying with the fighters at that point.

Also this is definitely the last story arc where youll see Bulma in the middle of any action. It was clear the writers were just trying to keep her relevant when they sent her to Namek but shell soon be slowly phased out (as will most of non Sayain fighters).

Krillin seems to be the only human who ends up getting consistent screen time by the mid-end of the series. Yamcha basically has no place anymore. Goku, Vegeta and even Gohan have surpassed him by like 30x power level even before they leave earth for Namek. By the time they return back, theyll be like 100x stronger than Yamcha would ever hope to be
