The better way IMO to say things is Liberals and Moderates in the North freed the slaves.

Conservatives in the South wanted to keep them.

There actually used to be Liberal Republicans in those days :O and Conservative Democrats (KKK etc).

That's why it makes much more sense to talk Liberals vs Conservatives, instead of misleading via party affiliation.

Seems to be a lot of mod overstepping these days.

When black people complain about slavery Republicans say that was in the past and they should get over it, but they also want to be remembered as the party that ended slavery in the past.

Even framing the discussion as "Liberals vs Conservatives" poses a challenge to nuance given the variety of strains in each, with varying degrees of liberalism and conservatism on different issues within those strains, and their ongoing evolution, never mind the constantly shifting definition of what exactly constitutes liberalism and conservatism with respect to particular matters.

I'd been under the impression the Republican Party emerged from the implosion of the Whig party over the question of slavery, but I'll concede that my history with respect to this is a bit rusty.
