She wanted her originals back and they were totally going to give them back, but they asked for too much and she declined, fucking knew it.

No they weren't. The deal sucked. She'd be several albums behind.

She could have signed up and the company could still be sold to Scooter. Which is significantly worse.

Put a clause in that says if you sell, I'm free. She had her chance and she said no. They sold because she left.

Of course they sold after she bounced, they have no one else and the company is only viable with her and her masters.

They wouldn't have agreed to that. Because as you said the company is worthless without her.

"Oh, one of the most successful women in music is still struggling to get through and be accepted, but she has money and can finally move on now so whatever"

Like... if Taylor fucking Swift is at this much mercy of the record labels, how the fuck is anyone else meant to cope/deal with them?

Paul McCartney doesnt own a lot of his music either and hes rich, powerful and respected by everyone.

Paul McCartney had first crack at purchasing his catalogue, but he listened to Yoko's advice about turning it down so that they would approach him later with a lower price. In truth, she wanted to cheat McCartney and buy the whole catalogue from underneath him. What she didn't expect was that Michael Jackson swooped in and bought the catalogue. As far as Jackson knew, McCartney had passed up a great deal.

I don't really know wtf is going on in all of this...

She, or someone with legal authority on her behalf, signed paperwork somewhere that says X company has rights to your songs.

That company sold those rights to a new buyer or something?

How is any of this the record companies fault? Want to be able to do whatever you want with your music? Own the rights.

The problem is that it is surprisingly hard to own your own music. Taylor Swift starter her career when she was 15. She signed a fairly standard record deal, which almost always include the company owning the rights to the songs. New musicians have functionally no leverage so they kind of have to sign these deals. Years later, Taylor Swift is one of the biggest names in music. She wants to move from her old record label and expressed desire to own her music. The deal they offered her was that she could her records back one album at a time, with her getting an album for each new album she makes (which the record company would own). This is obviously an insane deal of perpetual servitude. So she says no. Then Scooter Braun, someone with a vendetta against Taylor Swift buys up the company and now owns all of Taylor's songs.

Taylor wants permission to use these songs for her AMA performance. Scooter makes her an impossible deal, despite the fact that as the owner of these songs, Taylor performing them on a major stage after winning a major award would only make him more money. Taylor decides to take it to the court of public opinion. A smart move given that people are always going to side with the artists over a record company, especially when company is represented by Scooter Braun, a known dirtbag.

I agree that its fucked up and I think they will find a common ground. Im guessing they want a lot and know that they have her over a barrel and she wont pay what they want. Thats just what it seems like. Its all about that money and thats it in this game.

mccartney is actually the richest musician in the world. he is worth over a billion dollars

The whole Michael Jackson/Beatles ownership dispute is famous too.

The fact that a company can just sell off someone's lifes work without their input will always be bullshit.

This is why it pays to make unprofitable art. The less money your shit makes, the mire likely a label is to release the rights back to you.

Somehow, whether its through her songs or her real life, Taylor Swift always manages to dupe guys into thinking she is the victim in every situation. How in the fuck she is still able to do that is beyond me. No, never mind. I do know how shes able to perform this mind magic on the public.

I did not even attempt to refute anything, so I dont know what the fuck youre talking about. If I wanted to refute, I would have repeated what others have already reminded you- that Taylor Swift is upset because she doesnt own the rights to property she clearly intended to use and that threw a proverbial wrench into her plans. That is the legality of it, despite whatever you feel like crying tears about on her behalf. If contracts and ownership laws change in the future, then thats fine by me and good for future artists. But by all means, keep crying until then.
