Imagine going to places that will have you publically executed for teaching your religion because you feel that you will save their souls.

I'm an atheist but I can respect stuff like that as long as you arent trying to convert by force.

My aunt and uncle do missionary work all the time in Africa. It's a semi regular occurrence for groups of militia with AK-47s to walk up and take their food/medicine away.

I covered violent missionaries in my post. I'm aware there are those who wish to push their religion onto others, they have existed for centuries. But people who go to other countries just to teach are brave and should be respected.

Would you go into an area full of tigers knowing the tigers would probably eat you because you want to save them? The average person would say "fuck no."

And yes I also think religion is bunk and these people are basically doing nothing but it's still brave to do regardless.

On a missions trip, one is generally expected to evangelize along with doing some sort of service for the host area such as building homes, cooking meals, helping with education, health care, literacy, or whatever the area might be lacking.

Such bad people, I know.

I know a few missionaries and lots of people that went on "mission trips" to build a school and play soccer with kids or whatever for a couple weeks. And a nurse that went down to do medically things in a clinic, etc. Dunno why everyone here thinks that's so terrible.

If they were making a difference like actually taking these people, food, medicine and were teaching them how to fight back that would be something to be proud of.

At most they get a little more time to live but eventually some freedom fighter group will come and either kill them, take war brides/rape slaves, or recruit them by force.

A 2012 study by political scientist Robert Woodberry, focusing on Protestant missionaries, found that they have often left a very positive societal impact in the areas where they worked. "In cross-national statistical analysis Protestant missions are significantly and robustly associated with higher levels of printing, education, economic development, organizational civil society, protection of private property, and rule of law and with lower levels of corruption".[89]
A 2017 study found that areas of colonial Mexico that had Mendicant missions have higher rates of literacy and educational attainment today than regions that did not have missions.[90] Areas that had Jesuit missions are today indistinct from the areas that had no missions.[90] The study also found that "the share of Catholics is higher in regions where Catholic missions of any kind were a historical present."[90]
A 2016 study found that regions in Sub-Saharan Africa that Protestant missionaries brought printing presses to are today "associated with higher newspaper readership, trust, education, and political participation."[91][92]
Missionaries have also made significant contributions to linguistics and the description and documentation of many languages. "Many languages today exist only in missionary records. More than anywhere else, our knowledge of the native languages in South America has been the product of missionary activity Without missionary documentation the reclamation [of several languages] would have been completely impossible"[93] "A satisfactory history of linguistics cannot be written before the impressive contribution of missionaries is recognised."[94]
In 2019, Monika Zin, a German researcher of Buddhist art and achicitecture claimed that several Christian missionaries used translations of Jataka tales and Panchatanatra to claim that Jesus was Buddhist to advance their proselytyzation activities in Japan[95].

no, they leave that to their god, who threatens them with hell (and physical death, according to the bible). missionaries also frequently appear just before armies do.

I think it can be brave, sure. But brave and respectable are two different things. It's brave when people go and hunt tigers with a bow and arrow, but it's also a bad thing because poaching is bad. I also think evangelizing is bad. If this is about helping people, then that's good. I'm with the food and medicine and clothing and all that charity. I'm not for conversions and evangelizing though

There's something decidedly gross about missionary going to help feed the poor, build schools and homes, and then very cleverly sneaking the Jesus sales pitch in there.

Like, literally the only reason to go do these things as a missionary rather than as just a person going to help the needy is because you have ulterior motives that are designed to get YOU into heaven.

And no, missionaries are not in fucking danger. At least not more so than other people in the region they're going to. Spoilers: Countries that would be actually dangerous to Christian missionaries do not allow Christian missionaries in the first place. Do you think there's some secret underground cult of people spreading the word of Jebus in such a place? The present isnt like that Martin Scorsese movie from 2017 or so.

Remember that guy who got killed last year or so because he wanted to preach to the uncontacted people on North Sentinel Island in the Indian sea, or something like that? He was a complete fucking asshole who wanted to endanger the lives of these people via germ transmission, because them hearing the word Jebus is more important to him than them being alive, for religious reasons.

Historically a lot of missionaries have done a lot more harm than good........

The people who deserve praise are the ones who go to impoverished/dangerous countries to offer aid without holding it ransom in the name of Jesus.
