Earthbound isn't bad (I actually like most of the ranking) but it's all style and no substance. Fire Emblem, I want to like because all the pieces of a great game are there, but it's just so dagblasted hard. One of my major pet peeves is having to check a guide to figure out what to do next/how to solve a puzzle, and this happens several times in most of those games.
