Well, it's not an orchestral instrument, so even though you get instruments like the trumpet also taking center stage in jazz (a sexy musical culture however you like/dislike it), the sax doesn't have the same straitlaced associations, making it a bit of an outsider bad boy. Add that raspy sound and you've got it.

It wails. It screams like a human being in the throes of passion as fingers press and caress. The player sways and dips and soars, eyes lost in the music, mouth tight with the exertion, neck corded in an ecstasy of creation.

Try that with a piccolo.

The saxophone (specifically, the tenor sax) of all wind instruments most closely resembles the human voice in both tone and range. As such, it evokes feelings of "singing" and "speaking" while being played.

Essentially, a tenor sax, especially during a provocative blues or jazz piece, is talking dirty to you when it's playing.

I think I saw a youtube video about this, though I can't remember which channel it was. Maybe Vox, or Sideways, or Adam Neely, or someone else. Anyway, I recall it had something to do with the saxophone being used in jazz music, which was a distinctly urban sound commonly used throughout the 20th century in noir style films and TV shows. This kind of carried on through commercials and other things. I gotta find that video though.
