Military tech certainly hasn't improved since Vietnam, you're totally right.

I mean, as evidenced by the fact that the government constantly does shady tyrannical shit, no. Any rational person would see that most people aren't subjugated by force, but guns do contribute significantly to our economy so I say let em stockpile. I do think background checks need to be more robust, but I also don't delude myself into believing that that will really change anything.

So we should just make it easier for them? Even if we can't stop them we shouldn't just make it easy and roll over. What kind of stupid reasoning is that? Vietnam did ok as civilians with guns.

The current leader of the government is blatantly, consistently doing shady, tyrannical shit and the Second Amendment crowd is talking about using the Second Amendment to protect him.

There is nothing doubtful about it. History shows. When people rebel, portions of the military tend to switch sides.

Doesn't matter if the people match fire power. They just need enough strategy to take back the government.

The whole "do the people really stand a chance" argument is so silly and proven wrong constantly in history.

Portions, maybe. The military as a whole, doubtful. Look at Nazi Germany, soviet states, China, etc.

Yeah, soldiers would have the backs of the civilians, I don't doubt that.

It's the cops that would gun us down without a second thought, and lord knows they have plenty of practice already.

The US military has proven time and time again it fucking sucks at guerilla warfare. Plus soldiers aren't going to kill their own families and friends.

Not since Nuremberg. Disciplined, yes, Mindless, no. A soldier is expected to disobey orders if it leads to committing a war crime.

Correction: Nazis banned political dissidents and groups they wished to subjugate such as Jews from owning guns.

If the US decided to go to war on its citizens, so much shit would happen and it wouldn't be worth doing in the first place.

If you want to take over the country because of how rich and powerful it is but have to carpet bomb the entire country to do it, suddenly the country won't be so rich and powerful anymore. And every time they did it, more people would turn against the government, like how Americans turned against the Vietnam War but on a much larger scale. And add all the soldiers who would refuse to go to war with Americans.

If you want to own guns, good for you. But the chance of even using one in self-defense is slim to none, let alone in self-defense against a tyrannical government.

The people who actually have those things in the front of their mind worry me.

We all know the US military has been extremely successful at fighting small groups of underarmed, undertrained fighters in Vietnam and Afghanistan. That's why they crushed the resistance there with ease and didn't spend decades trying to stop some irregulars only to eventually give up and leave.

Also logistically, it's not just about killing your own people they'd have to contend with, but occupying that land afterwards from people that know the region by heart.

Iirc that's what made Vietnam and Afghanistan extremely difficult.
