I hear in America if someone smiles at you and asks you how your day is it's only polite to tip them at least $10. After all, companies don't pay livable wages intentionally so that amount is passed onto you. You wouldn't want literally everyone you look at on a daily basis to starve, would you?

Often times I tell them I don't want my change, but that's more because I don't like carrying change or singles and not because I want to tip them.
