Finally earned enough via Google Rewards to get it on mobile.

Should I take the characters they pre-made for me, or should I make my own party members?

Made myself a Priest, Warrior, and a Mage. Made my way west and into a cave where I eventually got the Thieves Key from a tower and then a... wrecking ball from the little Hamlet of Reeves?

Came in like a wrecking baaaaaaallllllll

make your own party
it always upset me that they changed the female merchants hair from blue to pink
it was blue on the nes and then pink in all other versions
but the thing is that when she had blue hair she looked like sailor mercury which was awesome.

the goof-off or jester i forget what its called now, is worthless. but if you get one to level 20 you can class change it to a sage without needing the special item (which there are only 2 of in the game IIRC) to do it
and the sage is the best class

They're not worthless. They're average in all stats, have a high crit rate, and you basically need one to get ze clawww.
Honestly i like them more than wizards or merchants

Sage is the best class, but as far as optimal stat curves go, getting <certain equipment> on your Fighter makes it so they always hit first, crit almost half the time, and dodge almost half the time @lvl~40.

just average in stats is the main reason they are weak. 25% of the time they will ignore your command and do nothing but goof-off (which was the name of them in the nes version)

they do have a high luck stat but honestly a party member that can randomly do nothing and ignore commands needs better than average stats to be worth the trouble of using them. which is why being able to turn them into sages without the book is the best thing about them

Only the GBC version has pachisi. It sucks. The newer versions also don't have monster medals and as a result, no second bonus dungeon.

My latest game I ran with Thief, Fighter, Priest.

I'd still rather use a fool than a mage or a merchant.

IMO
Warrior > Sage > Fighter > Thief > Pilgrim > Fool > Mage > Merchant

I usually run:
Warrior/Fighter/Pilgrim -- and change my Fighter into a Warrior later and vice versa, and my Pilgrim into a Sage. Sometimes I might change my initial Warrior into a Thief.

Or I'll just do:
Warrior/Thief/Pilgrim
Warrior/Fool/Pilgrim - and make a 1 Warrior, 2 Sage team.

They have much lower STR and HP. They still get GOOD gains in those stats, but they're rarely getting above 10 HP or 6-7 STR at a level up. Maybe at their good incremental level ups they can - but a normal level up? Nah. I think that's what the numbers were? It's been awhile.
EDIT: Maybe I'm thinking about VIT and not STR? I just know that there are at least 2 stats where Sages never get as high as Warriors on average.

And I'm someone who literally loads for hours to get maximal level ups. I literally used to make spreadsheets as a kid for this game, Hoshigami, etc.

Are Mages not very good in DQ3 then? This is literally the last main line game I need to beat beyond 10, but Mages always seemed to be worth it for massively powerful spells.

i'm just not a fan.
it's not like there are a ton of MP recovery items, reviving units is a huge hassle until later in the game, they're squishy, enemies get tons of crits, and there aren't reliable ways to redirect damage.
Not liking them is just my personal opinion. Plus the main character can kind of function as a mage himself. he gets at least some of the decent spells that hit groups

They get the only good fullscreen damage spells, and twinhits. Some of the best animations on the GBC, too.

SNES version definitely had Pachiki tracks.

SNES has Pachiki tracks and an extra dungeon with the Xenlon dragon that grants 3 wishes

GBC version has all that plus Monster medals and another bonus dungeon with a boss

Mobile version has the bonus dungeon with Xenlon but took out the pachiki tracks, monster medals, and the gbc bonus dungeon. It's still a solid version though

imo, the snes version is the best. It looks really good and the extras from the gbc version arent spectacular or anything. Monster medals are pretty annoying to collect honestly >_>

Females tend to get the best personalities and the best gear iirc

Made my way over to Romani or whatever?

Time to grind more to get better equipment! Honestly I felt like the opening for DQ 1 and 2 were far better than for DQ 3. I know DQ3 works on the framework of 1 and 2, and you know how epic it is going to be, but the start so far is, "Your dad was an adventurer? Oh boy, you better go out and be an even better one! The entire world knows about you for some reason, go out and hero!"

from a gameplay perspective female characters get armor and often abilities as well.
the dress's tend to protect against breath attacks which are high damaging moves end game bosses tend to spam.

lets look at DQ4 for a good example
alena and ragnor serve the same role. they are the melee fighters.

a end game ragnor can do around 500 damage every turn to the final boss
an end game alena can do between 600 to 1000 damage to the final boss every turn.
and in the nes game one of the twins was a way better healer than the male alternative even though he had a group heal while she didnt

Dragon Quest has always had a thing for female characters, true. They're just rarely ever going to be as good as "HERO!" overall. At least in so far as what I can recall. I'm pretty sure 95% of the time my initial character is hands down the best in the game.
