I would have too.

Unless I marry an heiress to a fortune or something.

Why do you think this? You never know what might happen, say a decade from now.

Marriage is also a financial institution whether you want it to be or not.

They're kind of pointless here. They aren't legally binding.

I don't deny that, but the very basis of marriage conflicts with the concept of prenup.

"I want to spend my life with you" vs "I don't trust you enough to know if I really want to spend my life with you".

Obviously, this doesn't apply to marriages for reasons other than love.

The very basis of marriage has nothing to do with finances. It's just spending the rest of your life with one person.

In modern society marriage is fully intertwined with finances, as are people's lives in general as opposed to times before the industrial revolution basically. That's why this matters.

Why get married in the first place? The concept is kinda silly nowadays. "Hey baby I love you so much that I want the government to know we are together and get involved in our business". Or dumber still "Let's make a promise in front of our invisible/make believe friend to always be together". Theres absolutely no benefit to getting married financially or otherwise. If you want to be together just be together.

This is just not true. There are many benefits to joining families. But all the tangible benefits are financial and societal.

Prenups do a good job of protecting assets earned before marriage, don't they? The parts of the prenup that get thrown out are the ones protecting assets after marriage.
