Hm. Besides Ratslayer, what other bullet-guns are good for inept noobs? For starters, once you can open Hard locks, make sure and go back to that floor safe in the Bison Steve I mentioned earlier. When you get to Novac soon, you can buy a unique 5.56 Pistol from the town merchant if you've got the caps. You can also try pickpocketing a unique weapon off of Old Lady Gibson at the Scrapyard (save before trying and reload if you get caught, will probably take awhile until you're successful). Finally, way back when, I recommended making Explosives a secondary combat skill. Once you leave Nipton, you'll start running into Jackals and Vipers, who have a high chance of carrying Grenade Rifles. GRs are one of the best all-around explosive firearms in the game; excellent crowd control, ammo's fairly easy to find, and if you're lucky enough to find an Extended Barrel mod at merchants, its range is outstanding. A modded GR will carry you until you find its unique variant later in the game, and then that will carry you for most of the game. Trust me, you'll need the AoE damage and crippled limbs that explosives bring to the table when dealing with swarms of enemies, especially Cazadores. Don't get suckered by its big brother the Grenade Launcher later on; it has more power, but a modded GR's range massively outclasses it. --- Simple questions deserve long-winded answers that no one will bother to read. ... The reaso nfor that is that the developers sort of had a whole "go south, go around, go up north" rather than "just go wherever". Yo ucan do that of course but you'll probably miss out on a more direct story. To put this into perspective you can skip like 30% of the stuff early on and just go the main area where the quest starts forming properly and continue on from there --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

The main draw of a Reloading Bench is if you take the Hand Loader Perk. What this allows you to do is break down regular ammo and convert it into hand-crafted ammo, which is (for the most part) ammo that does more damage at the cost of faster weapon degradation (you will usually get roughly 2 hand-loaded rounds for every 3 regular rounds you break down, but this can vary). Definitely something you should look into mid and late game once you start getting an ammo surplus, to give your weapons an extra punch. Hand Loader requires a 70 in Repair, but if you're on the path to getting Jury Rigging, this shouldn't be too much trouble.
Ammo conversion is another feature the Reloading Bench offers. Say you have a surplus of 20 gauge shells and badly need 12 gauge - with the right materials you can break down the 20s and convert them to 12s. In this case you will need empty 12 gauge shells to start with; breaking down the 20s will give you the rest of the necessary materials (but since 12s are more powerful than 20s, you won't get as much 12 gauge ammo back compared to the 20s you broke down). Similar ammo types need to be broken down for this to work: break down pistol rounds to make different types of pistol rounds, rifle rounds for rifle rounds, etc. One thing to keep in mind if you start crafting ammo in bulk is to get rid of your Lead every now and then, because it's the only component in ammo crafting that has weight. Each piece doesn't weigh much, but it can easily pile up into the thousands and put a dent in your carry capacity. So when you craft in bulk, make sure there's a merchant in walking distance so you can sell your Lead to them; you won't get any money for it, but at least you'll be rid of it. --- Simple questions deserve long-winded answers that no one will bother to read. ... Some of the food is pretty good in hardcore for the hard fights in the DLCs. If you know you're going to be taking damage, you eat it before the fight and it helps keep up since everything is gradual. The good ones heal for 30 seconds or a minute.

Since you chose Skilled, and (I'm guessing) have Comprehension, you're likely going to be able to max nearly all your skills by the time you reach the level cap anyways.
I always get Survival up to at least 45 for the Travel Light perk. It's the only thing you can do in the game to increase movement speed, and is well worth it unless you plan on adding some mods in for dashing or something. --- "If history is to change, let it change! Should I sell my grenade rifles if I plan on keeping ED-E? No, keep one. ED-E is an ideal companion for a character who uses Explosives because he's always ranged, so you won't have to worry about him being in the fray until the enemies are close enough that you shouldn't be setting off explosives anyway. The best effect you can get out of explosives is to get a first strike on a cluster of enemies, either outright killing them, or crippling them so that you can pick away at the remainder of their health with guns as they limp toward you. The Grenade Rifle is quicker and more accurate than thrown explosives when you need to get in that early ranged strike before a group of enemies can close the gap on you. --- Simple questions deserve long-winded answers that no one will bother to read. ... Yeah, a grenade rifle is good up until midgame even with minimal investment in the explosives skill. If you get the drop on a group of enemies, and you should plenty often thanks to VATS ability to highlight anything in vision, you can drop a few grenades in that have a decent change of crippling some limbs even if they don't do all that much damage.
