Most batteries now are sealed, maintenance-free units, but some older designs use a liquid electrolyte made of sulfuric acid and water. These flooded lead-acid batteries have holes in the top so you can add more water when the level gets too low.

Yes. Did it when my dad fixed up cars and bikes. I haven't done it in years though.
