People are free to do whatever they want on their own time. If someone's paying you to perform certain tasks you get your ass of your soapbox and perform those tasks.
My children will be learning that actions have consequences and that sometimes you just got to swallow your shit and move on. Those people got their order a few minutes later from a different server while she rode her high horse to the unemployment office. What a victory for civil rights!

Sometimes standing up for what's right has consequences, you're right, but I would rather lose a job and have my kids see that morality matters than be a coward and a hypocrite. Besides it's not like she lost a career over this, she was a waitress at a bar. When you actually get in to a career it's important to find a company whose values mirror your own.

I'm curious how the right to refuse service works in situations like this. Usually the employer is willing to back up their people, but in this case the restaurant didn't want to refuse service. All she did was ask if a different server could work that table, which seems pretty reasonable. I'm not sure if an individual worker is allowed to refuse service like this, but it seems like she should be able to.

Were they making these comments directly to other customers? Cause yeah - then stand up for bullying.
Or were they making them privately to one another at their table? Because if so -- ill reiterate, if i refused to do my job for people who i think are trash or have shit opinions i don't think I'd ever hold a job for the rest of my life. And that's not bootlicking - that's just acknowledging most people are garbage

I will say, and yeah its just my one time personal experience, that the time I refused to sell a pregnant woman cigarettes, when I worked in a convenience store I was written up by my manager. He didnt make me do the actual sale but I was reprimanded. Only service that be refused is the sale of alcohol when someone is already clearly intoxicated. And then that was usually follows by a call to the police to make sure they werent drunk and driving.

Anyway yeah, I don't think too much can be done here. She has every right to stick to her morals (Which is apparently something a few people here wouldn't be willing to do), but a waitress has low job security by design.
