You may not introduce or refer to yourself as Dan or any other nickname, though if somebody decides to call you this and it catches on, you obviously can't do anything about that.

I knew a Mike who spelled his name "Micheal" as late as when he signed my yearbook when he graduated from high school. About 10 years later, I bought a car from his family dealership and it was "Michael." I don't know if he changed it or had an epiphany at some point.
