As if a smartwatch could be "premium." And anyway you can get plenty of very good quality used watches around $2k, but it sounds like TC bought new.

Also thread is useless without pics.

In the phone vs watch debate, I'm on the watch side. It's the only jewelry men are allowed and we should take advantage of that. Also, knowing the time with a quick flick of the wrist is a ton more convenient than having to break out the watch

That being said, watches are pointless above $100. They don't perform much better and there's no point in mechanical movement, since the whole point of them is "muh craftsmanship" and they perform demonstrably worse than quartz watches.

Functionality matters and it's waaaaay above showmanship and craftsmanship in the importance ladder

That's kind of why I'm a car guy as well. Functionality in a car is much more than 'accuracy' like it is on a watch. Luxury, speed, acceleration, handling all matter and it's finding a balance that's so exciting and worth the money

If you dont appreciate good engineering craftsmanship thats your problem. This watch is supposed to be +/-5 sec/day, cosc. Theres a lot more that adds to the price of a watch too, such as sapphire crystal, lume and additional features (this one has a gmt hand)

As I used to tell my juniors "if you have to ask who is taking minutes..." - but thankfully nowadays it's more acceptable to use an iPad in a meeting (beats me why) than a laptop or smartphone.

In all seriousness though, IMO you either buy a cheap functional watch, a smartwatch/fitness tracker (still functional but can be stylish), or a proper luxury watch (Rolex, Tag, etc) which will be a timeless (yes I know) piece which you can hand down in the future.

Whilst I personally don't buy into luxury watches, most of my friends/colleagues do and I can see the appeal of a classy looking timepiece. My wife is trying to get me into them but I actually greatly prefer my Apple Watch (and I even downgraded to the Sports one this time around after my OG launch SS kept scratching up).

Why buy a $2k watch when you can get a $10 watch for $1990 less.

At least the Rolex will maintain or appreciate in value (depending on model and condition), and it'll have brand/snob appeal too. And given you just spent $2k and got a lemon watch which clearly wasn't QC'd... I don't know if it's 95% as good.

My watch also has good resale value. Not 100% like Rolex but 90% isnt out of the question. And because unlike the $10 watch mine is a regulated automatic to within cosc, has bgw9 superluminova, a gmt function, sapphire crystal with ar coating, and oh yeah fits my wrist perfectly (I have small wrists)

If you're happy with it and it fits, then by all means it's a good buy for you. I don't know how good the resale will be (I'm not that familiar with your brand) but I'm under the impression only certain models within certain brands tend to hold any real value over time. This may be a moot point as well for you seeing your other threads about not wanting kids (i.e. you won't pass it down as a family heirloom kindof thing which is what my friends claim they will do with their collections).

But hey I'm not going to shoot you down on your purchase since everyone has their vices and you're welcome to spend what you earn however you like. I'm just not a watch guy.

They say a watch represents who you are as an individual.

When you wear the Casio CA53W-1 Calculator Watch, you're cool. Timeless. Level-headed. Analytical, but also fun. You're in a suit with a popped collar. You like your martinis served in metal glasses. You probably use those spherical ice balls in your drinks.

The Casio CA53W-1 Calculator Watch tells the world that you mean business, but your business doesn't have to be boring. You probably drive a V6 muscle car instead of a V8, but that's OK because it still has a kick ass gunmetal paint job. When you play Smash Bros, you always pick Kirby even when he's the lowest-tier character.

Bruh, I'm an automobile/mechanical engineering student and I know what craftsmanship is, ok? It's okay to say that it's pricey because of the gemstones but I know that in my line of study, nothing beats functionality. It doesn't matter how many man hours and detail and precision it takes to make a watch and it doesn't matter how deep underwater it can go if you're not a diver. All that matters is if a watch loses 10 seconds a week and you have to have it cleaned every couple years or so, it's shit

And your quartz watch is demonstrably worse than an iphone that gets its time from the cell tower that gets its time synced from an atomic clock. The only point to wearing a watch in 2019 is that you've got a tiny little machine on your wrist that was painstakingly assembled from parts too small to handle with your fingers by an expert craftsman.

It's like, sure, a polyester microfiber fleece sweater will keep you warm for $10, but the $300 designer cashmere sweater feels much nicer and wasn't made by slave labor and isn't literally plastic.

Functionality is more than just pure accuracy. Having to break out an iPhone is less convenient when you're walking, let's say. It's downright illegal in some situations like exams which is relevant to a lot of us, like myself

And smartphones have an embedded quartz clock too, for when there's no signal or the main battery dies or whatever

it's not flushing money...as i said it has a high salvage value, so if anything it's a good rental
