Buying a laptop in this day and age is a nightmare unless you either know exactly what you want and/or money isn't an issue. There really isn't a basic cheap solution for people who do basic things.

Entry-level laptops are still built like shit and offer specs worse than flagship smartphones, Chromebooks are still limited as to what they can do, cheap tablets don't exist anymore, smartphones are getting more expensive and more complex.

Part agree, part disagree. The entry level laptop market is certainly flooded with shit and chromebooks are very limited, however flagship smartphones are like $1000 now, you can get a very good laptop for that price.

Also as for smartphone performance comparative to PC, I have a Samsung Galaxy S8+ (which was a flagship a couple of years back) - you can plug it into a monitor to use as a PC. It's still nothing at all like even a basic laptop in terms of performance, though.

Cheap tablets - I bought one for $100 that is absolutely fine for my mother to use. I think it does the job fine as a cheap tablet.
