The whole "he's someone with mental illness that society abandoned" angle gets smacked in the audience's face not unlike how the kids smacked Arthur in the face with his sign in the beginning

this is a comic book movie and none of it should be taken too seriously. early in the film where joker says what negative thoughts am i having? all i have are negative thoughts (every video about joker reposts it) shows he was rotten from the beginning. it's not that everyone failed joker it's that joker failed everyone else. i know spider-man, also a comic book movie, has that canon scene with uncle ben dying, which happens at the very beginning of the story :) but i've never been impacted by it. it was a set up to something and we never even knew who he was because his character was just introduced.

Yeah, the dude was sick and suffering, and nobody around him cared.

I'd say she was more concerned about his wellbeing than afraid of him.

But I'd have to watch the movie again, cuz I think I'm conflating all her scenes as one in my head.

Tbf we don't really know what the doctor did or didn't do because at that point Joker was an unreliable narrator

I dont buy that the city is as bad as the movie implies. Yeah it sure LOOKS like shit in every scene. But they talk as though there is something wrong with the people of the city. The only instances we really see of that are the kids that attack Arthur and the drunks harassing a woman on the subway. If this city is a powder keg that the murder of 3 Wall Street Bros sets into action I just dont buy it. Also what was the point of Chekhovs Super Rat? Not one appearance. Everyone knows show, dont tell. Just another instance of the movie implying the city is worse than what we see.

The last act of the movie is better but since it all hinges on this idea of the riots that I dont really buy to begin with.

If they had ironed out the plot a little more this could have been DCs first big win. It IS a victory but JP carries the team on is back doe. No help from anyone else.

You don't buy the city was that bad? That shit has happened before. Check out NYC in the 60s with that trash strike. Social nets were being slashed. Riots happen over all sorts of things.

My main issue is with how they handled the mental illness aspect. People with mental illness are far more likely to be victims of abuse and violence than to be the perpetrators. Yeah dude got failed by an inadequate system, take a number
