I was listening to the Empire podcast and this came up regarding the failure of The Goldfinch, a disastrous adaptation of an acclaimed and very long book. Most good adaptations of doorstoppers split them into parts (LotR, Deathly Hallows, It). So what is the longest book to have made a good single film?

Gone with the Wind is a good shout! Of course that is a 4 hour film so it would absolutely be two films these days.
NFUN posted... deathly hallows isn't even the longest harry potter book and it definitely didn't need two parts Fair point, somehow I forgot Order of the Phoenix.
