Take the Simpsons as an example

Whenever they would have a guest star on, they would actually go through the effort of writing a part for them, coming up with an actual character. Like Homer's seldom seen half brother Herb being played by Danny Devito and whatnot

Not shit like "Oh wow Homer is friends with Elon Musk (voiced by Elon Musk!!!) what sort of wacky hijinks will ensue!

Friends is another good example. They'd have guest stars on but they weren't themselves. Brad Pitt was that fat kid Rachael made fun of in HS, Bruce Willis was Ross' girlfriend's dad, and Ben Stiller was that guy Rachael dated who yelled at random people.

Hmm that is true I guess.

I suppose it's all in the writing though.

Like it's not inherently lazy but rather can be a sign of laziness.

Don't trust the B in Apt 23 did this phenomenally well with James Van Der Beek.

He played himself as a washed up actor in a post Dawson world. He was hilarious and incorporated his former star power in funny ways.

I think it helped they gave him good material to work with.
