I keep my beard trimmed and no longer go for the lumberjack look but it's still pretty full. I also have a tattoo on my hand that I don't cover up but I do wear long sleeved undershirts to cover my sleeves. Never had an issue in China either. Only one school tried to tell me I had to shave my beard and it was during my 3 day in school training for my TEFL certificate. It was basically volunteer work.
