I generally prefer easy games, or at least games with a easy learning curve. I just want to beat the game and go through the story to experience it (if it has a story mode.) I also don't want to be turned off from too much frustration.

The challenge I seek is not from AI characters (I just use them for training for the fundamentals) but from actual players.

I don't mind hard games, but it has to be a wacky woohoo power fantasy like Devil May Cry (on Dante Must Die mode), Metal Gear Rising, basically games of that nature. Also you have to be able to pause. If a game can't be hard while also respecting my real life obligations then that game can go fuck itself tbh.

Tougher games have more replayability

Ninja Gaiden 2 and Black come to mind

I don't like really hard games, but I do prefer for there to be some challenge, esp in shooters.

I like a challenge, but not anything rage-inducing. Preferably the game will have me make full use of the gameplay systems and keep me on my toes.

Hard if it's action

Normal if it's an RPG/strategy

I'm probably somewhere in the middle but lean toward easy. One thing I really appreciate in games is a broad spectrum of things to do at different difficulty levels. Like the last game I got into a lot was BotW. And for the last year or more I've almost been exclusively playing Warframe (offline). And I really appreciate that both games have so much to do. If I want to down a six pack and fuck off I can find something easy to do and still have fun and also still be doing something productive. Or when I want to get down and dirty I can set myself up for a challenge and really dig my heels in.

Bloodborne changed me

I think it was RE4 for me. People today don't realize how hard that game was when everything in it was new. Everyone is now judging it from the standpoint of the gameplay becoming a norm and all the exploits being obvious. I remember dying at that first village like 15-20 times and taking 10 minute breaks once in awhile just to get that urge to try again. Then the way you had no idea when something was gonna hit you with a QTE cause those were also not very mainstream or done to that degree.

It was pretty challenging. I remember dying often at the creatures that came up from the floor. Creepy ass things.

I played a bunch of difficult games during the NES days and I did play Ninja Gaiden and original DMC3 release which were challenging but those were kind of one offs. Since BB I much prefer challenging games.

rather than easy/hard I just want games that make you pay attention to what you're doing and engage with the mechanics of the game in order to clear it. This usually means harder games, but easy ones can feel like that too. Well, and some hard games are just hard for dumb reasons

Changed me as well. But I think I popped in God of War 3 on the PS3 and said "I'm too old to still be casually moving through these games." So I just started playing every game difficulty on Hard from there on. It was worth it FINALLY making past the intro to Neir Automata and falling in love with the rest the game had to offer.

I strongly agree with that too. RDR2 is easy as hell...as long as you're paying attention. As soon as you don't you're dead.

Hard as long as the difficulty isn't because of flaws with the gameplay mechanics (cheating AI, lousy/unresponsive/convoluted controls, glitches, gameplay handicaps, etc).
