I really like the idea of paying a flat rate to eliminate ads and in-app purchases from the apps I already use, but I'm not really on Android yet. Isn't it possible to eliminate ads entirely on Android across apps already?

Youll find well-known apps and games like Terraria, Monument Valley, Risk, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and AccuWeather. And others you might be less familiar with that are just as amazing, like LIMBO, Lichtspeer, Mini Metro, Old Mans Journey and many more. With new additions every monthincluding titles like This War of Mine and Cytus coming soontheres always something new to discover.

Those are some good games but it's also like half of the list I have in my head for best games on Android today. I don't think any of the stuff listed there is new and a lot of people who care about this stuff have probably already bought their examples.

Apple Arcade has a whole bunch of new stuff so this isn't really competing with that just yet.

Not really. Yes you can VPN or root and block ad servers at the hosts level but it turns out shit you were trying to use before just breaks. Ad blocking really only truly works for web. Stuff like YouTube has 3rd party apps designed just for YouTube to strip adds and they break occasionally when Google does an update.

Ah that's unfortunate to hear. I recall hearing many times over that you could do an effective system-wide adblock on Android but it's not too surprising that Google has probably engineered their product to break those types of things. I'll have to look into the apps available vs what I use already to see if it's an option for me when I switch. I do like the idea of doing a direct payment to avoid advertisements from an ethical standpoint. Mozilla is experimenting with something similar for the web iirc, not sure if it will catch on though.
