Fight Club's message was about being privileged and making 1st world issues a huge thing. It tried to tell you that having a good paying white collar job was awful, and that you need a great escape from the horrors of it, and then eventually you need to rebel against it.

I liked it at the time. I probably won't like it as much now, but it's not a bad movie.

But then the ending was Nah, just do whatever you want. A woman solves all your problems.

Actually the ending was quite positive. Norton's character came to his senses and realized everything Pitt's character was doing was evil and wrong. But that doesn't matter cause no one cares about the end message, they only care about the mid journey.

I watched it about 2 months ago and it still holds up. The message was alright and I suppose it's true. Shouldn't let every single thing consume you, because in the end it's just durt.

There was another movie I watched around the same time from the same release era and it didn't hold up at all. So much so I can't even remember what it was now.

That's an interesting take. I felt like the movie was tryna make you feel like shit even after doing okay in life, and using the worst outlet to make you feel better.

I suppose it could go that way as well.

The way I always saw it, was that you shouldn't let your possessions run/control your life. When you're hitting the point where you need matching furniture or the perfect outfit and it dictates everything else you do, you should probably step back.

It's like money... money and debt runs the world. So sometimes you have to just let it go and fall back to more primal/basic desires and needs. Not to say you should ignore money and such, but if you don't live/experience life then what's the point. You're not taking your khakis with you.

Norton's character was becoming a slave to work and making his ikea furniture perfect. Pitt was a way for him to snap and break out of it via the other extreme.

I distinctly remember that one chapter in which the narrator talks about Tyler Durden's night jobs, and thoroughly describes all the things Tyler does to the food he serves in great detail.
Rarely has a book made me laugh out loud that hard.

The book and the movie are about equal in terms of quality imo, though of course they feel like two very different experiences of telling the same story.
