The longer it's aged, the smoother it's going to be. Don't get hung up on name brands, or prices at that, a lot of low end whiskey is very overpriced.

I'd suggest looking into Dickel, it's not super expensive, but it's a very quality whiskey but not so much that you are paying $100 a bottle. They have different ranges of quality, but even the lower end is a lot better than Jack Daniels and whatnot.
