Cut the flower end off. Place onion on new flat side and cut in half through the root. Peel.

If I'm just doing easy slices, I'll hold the root and slice the onion.

If I'm dicing, I'll make several flat cuts parallel to my board from the flat end to the root without cutting the root along the height of the onion. Then perpendicular to the root, along the width then slice the onion holding the root.

fun fact but if you manage to get your hands on fresh onions you dont need to peel them, farmers dry onions after a harvest to create that outer layer and increase their shelf life
