Why do posters who hate rap always have 5000+ karma....wonder if it has something to do with being old and out of touch...
Nah. They're the whitest.

I'm 32, white, and grew up on hip-hop. My boss is approaching 50 and grew up with it too. Age ain't really it.

It's part of it. It's just not all of it. There will always be open minded people from less open minded realms. Definitely more to do with age than race.

Rap became garbage when gangstah rap was invented and infected the entire genre.

In my opinion? There are two key points thst separate good rap from bad rap:

1. Melodic and/or harmonic content. Drums and bass are cool and all but I like it to at least have some sort of texture. And a melodic chorus is nice, but not mandatory.

2. Content. When your song is about hookers, violence and/or your own ego I don't have any desire to listen to it.

Now, that may seem like painting with a broad brush but I actually do like quite a bit of rap because it satisfies both of those requirements.

Point number 2 is something that always irks me when people say. That same content is discussed in rock, metal, punk, pop, big band, etc music genres, but people only care when it's hip hop. I'm not criticizing you, it's just something I see a lot and it's always presented as if it's exclusive to hop hop.

Well there are two factors at play here:

1. Rap is much more lyric-focused than most genres, and while a lot of this comes out in the form of cadence, a lot comes out in meaning and stuff too.

2. Most genres are flooded to hell and back with generic love songs, or angsty heartbreak songs, which in fairness is, its own issue, lol.

Why is it OK for rock to have tons of violent content, but not hip hop?

I wonder....
Some racists think black kids mimic the actions described in hip hop lyrics in real life but white kids don't do the same in relation to rock music. Everyone mimics their music to some degree but only the insane/unhinged/chronically abused recreate the darkest stuff.

Also why is all the rappers who rap about being good at rapping any different from all the rockers rocking about rocking?

besides, a song doesnt have to be about something to be goodimo the quintessential example of a good rapper who doesnt actually say much but is very good at saying nothing is Lil Wayne

Thanks for all the suggestion guys. I guess I should change the way I been searching for music. I still depend on rock stations and youtube recommendations to find stuff. Which seems to be pretty outdated way to do it.

It became garbage whenever mumble and "trap" rap became a thing, so for the last 4 or 5 years or so now, with a few exceptions of non-mumble and trap rappers releasing things.

Flatbush Zombies is doing a good job of actually rapping I'd recommend checking out their song "Headstone".

Joey Badass is doing a good job.

There are still plenty of rappers who actually focus on lyrical rap and not just mumbling.

Imagine being on gamefaqs for so long that you go from bitching about actual video games to just bitching in general and not adding of value to any discussion.

Eminem was really good. Now hes just mediocre. I dont think he ever really got out of his angry rapper gimmick and it hurt his quality once everyone else moved past it.

There is no such thing as mainstream anymore with the streaming world. Anything can get popular, and often does. It's also not all complete shit. I used to have that hipster mentality too, 10 years ago.

There's some real creative, talented artists coming up in a lot of genres right now, several of whom are popular.

I like quite a few strains of newer rap but almost all would be classified as more underground. I virulently hate the super mainstream melodic auto tune rap. Some mainstreamish rappers still catch my ear though like Lil Tecca earlier this year.
