The Arizona Supreme Court has ruled in favour of the owners of a Phoenix Calligraphy business who REFUSED to create wedding invitations for GAY COUPLES citing their CHRISTIAN BELIEFS!!

In a narrow 4-3 opinion, the highest court said that Breanna Koski and Joanna Duka, the owners of Brush & Nib Studio cannot be compelled to create custom invitations under a Phoenix City Ordinance protecting members of the LGBTQ from discrimination!!

Justice Andrew Gould said "The rights of free speech and free exercise, so precious to this nation since its founding, are not limited to soft murmurings behind the doors of a person's home or church or private conversations with like minded friends and family. These guarantees protect the right of every American to express their beleifs in public. This includes the right to create and sell words, paintings and art that express a person's sincere religious beliefs"

They overturned multiple rulings by lower courts as Justice Gould says the heifers beliefs on same sex marriage is old fashioned but it was their guaranteed right as an american to refuse service to anybody they please"

Phoenix Mayor, Kate Gallego said "Today's decision is not a win, but it is not a loss. It means will continue to debate over equality in this community"

But Brianna Westbrook, the VP of the Arizona Democratic Party expressed her concerns over the ruling and it's possible repercussions tweeting it's opening the door to owners to outright discriminate against LGBTQ people

Cold Hearted Hefiers, Koski and Duka met at a Bible study who are devout Christians and have opened up their business in 2016 and wern't asked to do business with gay people until recently and said it was unfair for them to be forced to create art for people they see as an AFFRONT to GOD.

Do you think businesses should be allowed to refuse service to Gay People??

Pretty sure they don't do any custom decorations. You could probably have them write penis on the cake?

Which goes directly against the reason we have discrimination laws.

Why not throw out the laws on abortion and shit like that too. Private businesses and organizations should be able to operate and server clientele without explanation.

You can't force someone (or a business) to make something the way you want it. Discrimination laws are irrelevant.

The reason they refuse to make it is entirely irrelevant. It's a basic first amendment right.

It's not complicated at all, unless you're big on authoritarianism only when it fits your political views.

There is a fundamental difference between "refusing to serve" someone and refusing to make the precise thing they requested.

Was it the best move they have made? Probably not. But private businesses are allowed to refuse service to anyone so its a non issue except for a select few that like to profit off of being singled out

Yeah it really does seem like this.

"Okay there are 10 places in town that'll do it out of the 11."
"Lets go ask the 11th one and throw a shitfit when they say what we know they'll say."
"Sounds good! I wanna be big online and on TV!"

I don't agree with the sentiment of the people who refused service, but I say just let it be well known and people can decide they don't want to do business with them anymore. When they lose service from a bunch of straight people also because they want to be bigotted, they can stand around and watch their business dwindle to nothing while the more progressive people PROSPER.

I also don't agree with trying to strongarm people into doing things they (stupidly) don't believe in.

Why should a private business apologize for something that they have a right to do?

Do I agree with it? As a gay man I say no. But Im mentally stable enough to know what people have a right to do

I think it depends, given the nature of their work, it can be seen as support for that which they disagree with, so yes they should be free to withdraw from that.

But if its something like selling them a bag of flour, PC parts, fixing a car, etc, then no given its not illegal and outside of their control.

I dont get why this is hard to understand for some. Person lives their life thinking certain things are abhorrent and will bring upon us all the wrath of the Lord or however they put it.

...Then they make cards for a gay wedding. It doesnt make sense, and even if it were the law, many would not place that above their religions law. And good point on freedom of religion, I dont think being forced to act against ones religion (especially when its that of the entire country originally) is in line with that. And I say this when I dont even like Christianity.

When the nature of the business entails support for the specific action outlawed by the religion, yeah, a religious person is not gonna take that well and view it as being forced to act against their religion. If you cant perceive that then the problem lies with your understanding of how this stuff works. Your feelings on a matter will not dictate how the world behaves towards it.
