The generation is 20 years old now.

I went to an Ubisoft Experience yesterday and there was a PS2 and Xbox in the 'retro lounge'

I think it's time to call it.

I thought NES was Retro when the N64 was out (well, 1999 I guess), so fucking A right it is.

Two gens back, that's the rule. We're close enough to the end of the gen to say it's two gens back.

I turned up to the Ubisoft experience late and Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time were still in the tutorial levels. So it's probably pretty likely people tried to play these games, couldn't figure out wtf to do and moved on. Times are different man. People are used to games being universal and easy to understand.

When I jumped in Splinter Cell you had to hide a guard in the shadows while another guard walked past. I saw people playing the game before me so I don't think anyone got further than this beforehand.

The Dreamcast just turned 20 in the US a few days ago and the PS2 will be out for 20 years next year, then the Gamecube and Xbox will be 20 the year after next. So i would say they are retro at this point.

I've always considered them retro, as it's before the online, gritty, Western-focused AAA shift the industry took with the Wii/PS3/360 era.

Nah, but I think it's just around the corner for me.

Some of its titles are just flashier PS1 games, right down to shoulder button strafing.

But overall, I still remember it for its standout titles, which have aged like wine.

I have considered that generation retro for a long time. It's the last generation before online was standard. They could all go online, but it was pretty primitive and didn't feature storefronts or constant firmware updates. Also Wii and PS3 have have new releases in the last year, so I don't think we can call them retro.
