So you're casually going to ignore than you were off by almost 50?

Seriously? I counted at least 35 from non flu doses alone. Then add in the yearly flu shot and I'm not THAT off.

Most of those are just boosters and multi-stage shots anyway.

Do you also think older folks should skip the new shingles shot because it's two parts and people used to just deal with chicken pox and shingles?

I'm not anti-vaxx as a rule, but I sympathize with them since my sister and her husband are hardcore anti-vaxx. I don't necessarily support them, but I definitely understand the moral quandry of it.

The furthest I would describe myself is skeptical of certain vaccinations, but not against them as a whole. Mostly cuz as a little kid I got really sick right after getting a flu shot (they recommended I get one every year cuz I have asthma).
Similarly, when I was an EMT, I had a decent number of patients over the years who developed flu-like symptoms after receiving a vaccine.

Like, I legitimately think the flu shot is a racket and should only be given to vulnerable groups like elderly and immuno-compromised. BUT stuff like measles and rubella and shit that's been under control? Yeah, that's just silly.

To protect or to not protect against communicable diseases? Truly a hard decision.

The flu shot is cheap, widely available, and oftentimes free through insurance. It may not always be effective, but it is bad example of Big Pharma screwing people.

Not for nothin, but this kind of attitude is what fuels actual anti-vaxxers to be so crazy. Like, I flat out said I think it's silly to hold out on major vaccines, but just cuz I'm not fully participating in the circlejerk you're still being condescending lol.

Like, shit like that is why American politics are so fucking bitter and one-sided.

Like I said in my post, I mostly just think the flu vaccine is a racket because in my own personal and professional experience, it's not very effective, or necessary.

People are being condescending because you are claiming the flu vaccine is a racket and that you don't trust it. No one is doing anything wrong except for you.

It's really weird how many people are so against the flu shot. I mean, I get it considering most people assume any stomach virus is the flu, but still

I mean like I said, I'm only really skeptical of it because I personally did get a bad reaction from it as a child, stopped getting it after that, and have only had the flu once in like 20 years after.
That and I had examples of my own patients getting side effects from flu shots who really didn't need to go to the hospital, but did regardless because they were worried about dude effects they received from it.

Like I said before, if you're immuno-compromised and the flu actually poses a real threat to it, it's absolutely a good idea. But I don't see a reason to get it if you're an otherwise healthy adult when it's success rate varies from year to year.

Oh I thought when you said "skeptical of certain vaccinations" I thought there were ones other than the flu shot.

There are some nuances with vaccination and public health that make these misconceptions common. Flu shot needs a few weeks to reach maximum effectiveness so the "it doesn't work" criticism is often because people get it too late in the sick season and are exposed to viruses in the community around the time they get the shot. This feeds into the second misconception that "I got sick after getting the shot." Given the fact upper respiratory illnesses have incubation periods of up to a few days and you can't see what is contaminated, no one is ever able to really link the actual exposure with their eventual illness. And we're kind of biased in our reliance of temporal factors in cause-effect relationships.

Which finishes with the third misconception is that while the flu vaccine can certainly illicit an immune response (mild fever, some achiness, fatigue) for a short period of time, an actual influenza infection is a very serious illness that is not at all equivalent or interchangeable with the sniffles.

So yeah, you might have already been exposed to a virus when you were a kid and got the shot, or you mistook the couple hours of feeling crummy and low grade temp as getting "ill" after the shot, when in reality influenza in a child with asthma is potentially life-threatening.

Likewise I would take an EMT's assessment with a grain of salt when it comes to things outside of BLS. Flu shots are administered during the sick season, so correlating a patient telling you they recently got the flu shot with their URI symptoms during peak season is just a classic mistake of correlation doesn't equal causation.

They never openly admit it, they always dance around it with "I'm not an antivaxxer, buuuuut [blatant antivax stance]" so they don't get rightfully mocked until they have to leave the site or make a new account.

There's some guy with tree in his name that admits to believing every single thing that antivaxxers say, but claims they aren't one themselves.
