Then there's always that one psychopath kid that uses the left and right handles. You can tell they probably grew up torturing stray cats.

I actually only a couple years ago read users on here saying that they used the left and right handles and stretched their thumb over to use the analog stick.

I a) don't know what is wrong with them and b) don't even fully understand how they also made effective use of the z button.

Psychos I'm telling. They're probably masochists too. I can't see any normal person enjoying use the controller in such a way. They must get some weird thrill from it.

When I was a kid and got my dad to try it and he used two fingers to move the joystick. Thumb and index fingers from left hand while holding the right. That image is forever burned in my memory since I've never seen anyone else use it that way

Leave it to Nintendo to design a controller that requires 3 hands.

Console for aliens confirmed

Mischief Makers required left/right grip.

But yeah, if the Stick is required, then it's center/right.

Kirby 64 and the Pokemon Stadium games used the D-Pad, not the analog stick.

I think you could also use that control scheme in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, if I'm not mistaken.

No, he didn't play much and since he'd only play racing games, it worked but just looked really awkward.

To be fair, you would get more precise control that way

Maybe he was more advanced than the rest of us.

I played N64 with the controller 90 degrees to the left.

So basically:
- Front of controller in my left hand
- L button under left pinkie
- R button under left index finger
- Analog stick under left thumb
- Right thumb for A, B, C buttons
- Right middle finger for Z button

Apparently this was grossly unorthodox, but I wiped the floor with people in Smash so it didn't matter.

That controller was fine to me when I had an N64, and felt like a puzzle when I played one again like 10 years later.

The controller is why I never played anything on the N64. Always wanted to play Ocarina but the controller just makes it unbearable.

no game used both to effect. you were either using the analogue stick, at which point you used middle and right, or the d-pad at which point you used left and right. literally the only games I know that used both were the two big wrestling games, 2000 and No Mercy, and they only used the analogue for taunting (no Z button).

The "malformation" of the N64 controller is vastly overrated, because while there were an impractical number of buttons for two hands to use, nobody actually used them all at once.
