TBH it shows how bad she is with her finances. She makes 180k a year and is still making minimal payments on her 20k student loans? If she concentrated her income on her debt, she'd have paid it off by now.

That chick needs some Dave Ramsey in her life.

Shes earned that ... for 8 months. And as has been pointed out she had to relocate for the job incurring quite a bit of personal cost.

Why pay it off when you know it will be forgiven since you have authority to vote on bills to do such?

I'd MUCH rather have this happen than how Donnie fleeces tax payer money to his resorts in a near daily basis.

You pay more interest in the long run. Better to pay it sooner.

I live in the DC area, plenty of nice apartments around that don't cost as much as hers. Navy Yard is on the new and pricey side with a lot of amenities and she choose to live there. That's on her. I don't feel bad for her at all.

Its the governments fault that school is expensive. It backs student loans, so schools can jack up prices to levels that dont make sense for many majors because seats will be filled anyway. If the government does not address its role in creating the student loan bubble, a debt jubilee will be demanded every decade.

So..... Nice work paying off $1k of your loans, AOC?

Also, I'm all for debt cancellation but boasting about paying off $1k of your loans when you make $200+ is hilarious

Moonlighting every off day, and living like a resident

But I wasn't going to wait around for the government to fix my problem (I doubt it'd even significantly impact my tax bracket anyway)

I do think student loan debt needs to be fixed. My only major concern is what happens to the people who go to college after this bill passes. Tough luck?

There are far better ways of building credit than slowly paying off a student loan, and many of them do not require paying interest if you're smart about it.

Rational people pay off their debt when they afford to, not use it as a tool for a stunt. She's been in office long enough to have made about $80-90k after taxes.

Paying off $20k is a walk in the park with that kind of income, unless she enjoys giving the government free money in the form of interests.

As long as forgiving their debt doesn't cost me anything it's ok with me.
Not forgiving it is already costing you a stagnant economy, which is costing you money.

America is a country of spenders, a significant portion of that student debt will be repladed with credit card debt, car loans and mortgages.

Giving millions of spenders more spending money is a good thing. While some certainly will learn to be more frugal, it's not going to be what happens for most and I'd dare say even 20% not getting into a new debt nothing a year would shock me.

She comes from a 'poor' family, too.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a 'local' college. They offer the same education at a fraction of the cost and often have lower living costs (smaller communities, living at home, etc).

I went to a local college (now a university) and am doing a bachelor at another local college that is partnering with a university. It is way cheaper. My field is regulated, so in order for a school to teach the program, it has to be accredited. I am saving a ton of money doing my studies this way.
