This topic's making me contemplate if movies ever "grow out" of being "cult classics"... I wouldn't consider Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory to be a cult classic at this point in time since it's a staple childhood film for people who grew up in the 80s & later; John Carpenter's The Thing was considered a cult film for a while, but it's among the top 20 (maybe even top 10) most popular horror films ever now. The Big Lebowski's getting there too I guess.

Yeah that was in the back of my mind too. I knew it was a box office failure at the time, information regarding the critical reception at the time seems a bit mixed. I guess this constitutes its own conversation for another topic...
