I want to replace a light fixture. I can just have the light switch on the off position then disconnect the wires, right? Only risk of shock is if someone turns the switch back on... Right?

Mostly yes. What you also need to be careful of are the neutral wires, the white ones. If there is more than one of them, make sure they are twisted tightly together when the switch is off. If they get loose and you touch them, it's possible to get a good shock from that too.

Why can you not just isolate the circuit breaker for your lighting while you do the job? You don't have to cut power to the whole house.

This is pretty much true. Just flip the breaker. They're easy.

I didn't want to turn the breaker off, because I am replacing 12 exterior light fixtures and I didn't want to turn off 6-or-so breakers. Anywho, I replaced all 12 of them safely without turning the breaker off (just turning the switch off).

Won't lie. I've swapped light fixtures with just the switch off. Though I wouldn't recommend it.

Flipping the breaker is just good practice.

Good to hear it came through safely. I'll keep this in mind if I have to change my own. I'll err on the side of caution though. I don't want to die too fast.

Volts? What's the ampere rating? I know nothing of electrical wiring so please, spoonfeed me.

True it is the amps that kill.

I assume he's on a 20 amp breaker. Either way he should just flip the breaker.

No its usually the fall off the ladder as a result that causes the more severe injuries

I've put up ceiling fans with running electricity.

Just don't touch the open parts of the wires or get them mixed up when connecting them.

Amps is the size of the load, directly proportional to the voltage and wattage. A 60w bulb at 120 volts draws half an amp, a 3600w load at 240v is 15 amps.

No. Shut off the circuit breaker.

Electrician here (well, up and coming one), it generally is fine and I've replaced dozens and dozens of fixtures with just the switch off, but it's not 100%. Other things could be tied onto the circuit and you have to watch out for 3 way switches sometimes (where you can turn off the lights with multiple switches).

Still, if you get shocked, you're more than likely aren't going to die unless something totally crazy happens or you fall off a ladder and break your neck or something. For most home lights, you will only get a small shock if you do, but sometimes they might be on a 220 circuit though there and that will hurt. That's a big rarity though.

To be totally safe, turn off the breaker/remove the fuse. Just do it. Having to turn off/turn back on your computers or tvs or whatever is better than possibly getting hurt.
