They're a drain on society. They're rarely capable of contributing. Out of touch. And god talking to them is awful they normally move slower mentally and I hate having to talk slow and repeat myself. Tbh I'll just die over being old. At least kids grow up old people are a burden until they eventually die

also I feel like a large portion of my opinion is never being close to my grandparents so I've never learned to care about the elderly.

Seems as if the only value you place in human lives is their ability to serve the government or generate a profit. Is this also how you feel about the mentally and physically disabled? Why must a person be considered a burden if they cant work full time or serve the state?

Sometimes old people just don't have anybody to talk to. Their spouse died, their friends died. Their kids moved away and have their lives, it's sad.

Some get bitter, some just want some sort of social interaction. Then they go out and get treated like a burden. It's a shame, many have great stories to tell if somebody would take a minute. But, everybody is too busy, so they get pushed to the side and discounted. It's sad

One of the worst things about American culture is the lack of respect for the elderly. My great grandpa lived to be 94 and still weeded his garden and mowed. Hugging him was like hugging a tree or a statue, dude was solid. And my grandpa served in world war 2 and is a badass.

He was in the NRA for like 50 years, then lately with all the mass shootings and the NRAs response, he cancelled his membership. Hes a great person, honest and did his duty for this country, always giving and not just taking. He deserves respect. Now hes taking care of my step grandma who is suffering from dementia, and grandpa wont put her in a home because he still loves her after all these years.

I guess I'm lucky that most old people I've seen are pretty chill. Like they just want to relax, they're nicer than average for me. Lol

Agreed, the folly of the young is to discount the old. They've lived as adults longer than most of the younger who look down on them have lived. If more people would take a minute, and listen to their stories, we'd be better for it.

There will always be crabby old folks, but there's plenty of crabby young ones too.

It's amazing to sit and talk with an old person, they're generally super appreciative that somebody their age would even give then the time of day, let alone talk with them.

Hearing their stories, and giving them somebody to talk with is such a small thing but it really means a lot to them. It's sad that nobody seems able or willing to do such a small thing these days

Why is everyone so dramatic when it comes to age?

"Once I hit 50, I'm ending my life. I can't stand being old" Coming from early 20 year olds who most likely haven't even spent a quarter of their full life on earth.

Like you are all young and got that youthful energy, I get it. No one wants to be slowed down because of age but you guys will adapt when the time comes. Like it's weird to me that these people think that they will think the same 30+ years from now. It's like the equivalent of a 8 year old boy thinking that there's no way he'll be attracted to girls in the future because they have cooties or something. Lol

You excused your grandparents. Do you think others will? Judging by this topic, and your posts regarding other old people, your grandparents are not worth treating with respect.

Old folks are people, they deserve to be treated as people, and they should be respected as you think you should be. They've got much wisdom to share, and stories you'll only get headlines of if that.

I'm not really of the opinion that respect should be freely given simply because the person is old. I have respect for some old people. I respect the ones that actually aren't old assholes. That seem like they want to impart their vast knowledge to a younger generation. There is a lot that can be learned from them. But I'm not going to respect them just because they are old. I've encountered old people that think because they are old that excuses asshole behavior, it doesn't.

And when they've been looked down upon repeatedly? Patronized and ignored? You ask that they respect you, when you don't respect them. They've seen that before, they're over it.

You know a disrespectful person when you encounter one I'd wager. So do they, just because their body is letting them down doesn't mean their mind is.

I'm not looking for a fight, I'm just saying they're people and shouldn't be looked at that way. Just a bit of understanding would go a long way.
