The movie showed him to be ignorant (he didn't know who Sigmund Freud was) and snobbish about Titanic's success. I guess you could make a loose argument about him having a small amount to do with the sinking since he suggested that the ship go faster. Toward the end, he jumped into a lifeboat to save himself. I guess he's supposed to represent the fatcats who saved their own skin but was he really that bad? He was just an idiot who never really hurt anyone. Can you blame the guy for not wanting to die? He was helping people along and the gentlemanly standards of the time implied that he should've gone down with the ship. He didn't betray anyone or screw another potential survivor over.

These two statements are mutually exclusive.

I mean he kinda screwed over everyone by saying the ship should go faster. That was one of the factors that led to them hitting the iceberg. Then hes like well fuck this shit and jumped off? Um yeah thats pretty bad in my book.

Ismay bashing started because Hearst, the sensationalist newspaper owner and basically the Rupert Murdoch of the era, had a personal beef with him and wanted to stick it to him.
