I'm against binge watching. Watch one film, savor it for a day or two, then watch the next.

Not trying to come of as a "teh books arr better" snob. Honestly, the books aren't for everyone. It can be hard for most people to get through them, and it kind of was for me, too. But IF you read the books first, watching the movies is a very satisfying visual adaptation. They really did a great job on almost everything in a way that is extremely rare for movie adaptations of books.
IF you were going to try to read the books first, I would suggest the audiobook recordings by Phil Draggash. He's an amazing narrator who also does unique voices for each character. He also added music from the movies and background sound effects and ambiance. Listening to this FEELS like watching a movie. I would recommend reading The Hobbit first if you really want the full experience, but I guess you could skip it. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I only watched the first one and hated it. Obviously I'm missing something because so many people love them.

Is the Hobbit a prequel to the Lord of the Rings? No, The Hobbit was published 17 years before the first Lord of the Rings book. So The Lord of the Rings books are sequels to The Hobbit. Bear in mind, though, that The Hobbit was meant to be a children's book. I mean it's got some pretty cool stuff in it and it appeals to people of all ages. But there were a few moments that come off as kind of fairy-talish. Another thing to bear in mind is all of the books were written in a time when readers had longer attention spans. There are a lot of boring parts to slog through. Those audiobooks help tremendously with that. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Yeah I think most people can watch the LOTR movies and appreciate them as they are. But the books may be tough to get through unless you really appreciate the world Tolkien set up. And of course if you do grow to love the books the movies become even better. As already mentioned they actually are really good adaptations despite a couple major differences. Any changes they made or excluded events generally made sense because there's only so much you can fit into a film compared to a book.

Yes just go and watch them. Even if you haven't read the books, go ahead and jump in, especially if you like fantasy stories. Definitely watch the Lord of the rings movies before the hobbit movies though...
