I usually live by the credo of "Nice things are nice" to dismiss criticism of basic or silly things that people take tender joy in.

Yes, they are. Some of the nicest things in the world are nice things. And I encourage people to like them. But some nice things can be private, for instance, affectionate pet names for one another or favorite spots for tiny kisses.
